• Write What You Know: Dorothy Allison based a lot of the book on her own experiences; she grew up in South Carolina in the 1950s to a poor, single-mother who worked as a waitress (her father died when she was a baby) and she was sexually abused by her stepfather. Like Bone's mother, Allison's mother was only fifteen when she had her daughter and chose to stay with her husband even after learning of the abuse, although she did try to stop it.
