  • Acclaimed Flop: Coming out a month after 9/11, the film couldn't make it at the box office, but had good reviews and earned its stars several awards nominations, including a Golden Globe and Screen Actors Guild nomination for Cate Blanchett.
  • Actor-Shared Background: Terry has a phobia of antique furniture. So does Billy Bob Thornton.
  • Cast the Expert: All the inmates at the prison in the beginning are legit, the movie was filmed at the real Oregon State Penitentiary with real prisoners as extras.
  • Cast the Runner-Up: Val Kilmer was originally considered for the part of Joe, and Bruce Willis was originally going to play the part of Terry, but due to scheduling conflicts, Kilmer backed out, and Willis took over the part of Joe.
  • Life Imitates Art: In 2007 in New York, five men were prosecuted and convicted for crimes imitative of this film's plot.
  • Real-Life Relative: The little girl who belches during the dinner scene is Bruce Willis' daughter, Scout Willis, and according to him, that belch was not enhanced. The other girl is another one of Willis' daughters, Tallulah Willis.
  • Throw It In!: The girl burping at the dinner table wasn't planned, but was left in and improv'd around because the crew found it funny. Even better when you realize said girl is actually Bruce Willis' daughter and his laughter after the belch was in line with Joe's character.
  • What Could Have Been: Hans Zimmer was the only choice for the music composing. However, Zimmer was just finishing Hannibal and Pearl Harbor at the time in London, and he already committed himself to Black Hawk Down, which was recorded in the U.S. Barry Levinson said that he would move the film for a later release, waiting for the German composer, since they have been good friends since Rain Man. Zimmer politely refused it.
