Trivia / Babylon 5: The Lost Tales: Voices in the Dark

Go To

  • Creator Backlash: Despite interest from Warner Brothers, Stracynski decided to end the Tales Project with this sole entry. He's explained he was left dissatisfied with the low budget (additional Tales episodes would have been similarly budgeted) and he did not want to dilute B5's legacy with, in his view, further sub-par entries.
  • Reality Subtext: Dr. Franklin and G'Kar are said to be exploring beyond the rim of known space, a nod to the fact that their actors had died in the years before this film was made.
  • Technology Marches On: A side effect of the original series concluding in 1998, and The Lost Tales being released in 2007, between which the state of the art of computer-generated graphics had moved on considerably. The production company (who also worked on the Battlestar Galactica reboot) presented a low-resolution draft rendering of the CGI models for the film to let J. Michael Straczynski get an idea how things were coming along, and they were at least equal in quality to the best end-product CGI from the original show.
  • What Could Have Been:
    • This was meant to be a miniseries rather than a movie. Ideas for additional episodes in the series ranged from an already-scripted Garibaldi episode, to themed episodes around the various factions and races, and perhaps one about the Telepath War.
    • With the announcement in 2021 of a Babylon 5 reboot being in the works, Lost Tales would prove to be our last best hope for a relaunch of the original series. Among other challenges associated with relaunching a show two decades after it was last in full production, JMS noted that it would be difficult at best to pick up the original continuity with so many of the original cast having passed away.
      • Ultimately the franchise returned in 2023 with The Road Home, an animated film that worked round the age of the remaining cast by moving medium (and which also appeared to have a significant budget bump).
