• Very Loosely Based on a True Story: The author claimed to be inspired to write about reincarnation when his young son displayed a sudden, unexplained ability to play the piano, accompanied by the boy insisting that he learned to play "when he lived before," describing his memories of life as a grown man. The memories and the piano-playing ability faded within a year of appearing, and the son was unable to remember anything he told his parents about his former life. Needless to say, his father was unnerved by the interlude, which led to his research into incidents of reincarnation and eventually developed into the story.
