• Development Hell: Co-creator Nancy Miller tried to get the show into production from 1990. CBS took it up, then nixed it before filming could start. It's believed that the racial themes made networks uneasy.
• Fake Mixed Race: Inverted. Olivia Friedman, who played the Caucasian Kelly, is of Asian and Caucasian descent.
• I Want You to Meet an Old Friend of Mine: M.E.'s older sister, Teresa, usually shows up in the past, but her present day self is played by none other than Delta Burke, star Annie Potts' friend and coworker on their former show Designing Women.
• The Other Darrin: The actresses who played the young M.E. and Rene, (Mae Middleton and Shari Dyon Perry, respectively) were replaced by older ones—Olivia Hack and Maya Goodwin, respectively—roughly halfway through the series run.
• Write Who You Know: Co-creator Nancy Miller spent childhood summers in Birmingham during segregation and based many of the past-day stories on her experiences.
