  • Completely Different Title: MGM changed the title to Love so they could run ads saying "Garbo and Gilbert in Love", a nod to their Real Life romance.
  • Creator Backlash: Tolstoy once referred to Anna Karenina as "an abomination that no longer exists for me".
  • Fake Russian: Happens in a lot of different film adaptations.
    • The 1927 film has Anna Karenina portrayed by Greta Garbo, who is of Swedish descent, while a mix of American and English actors make up the rest of the cast.
    • The 1948 film also had an entirely British cast, including Vivien Leigh as the title character, while Count Vronsky and Konstantin Levin were portrayed by Irish actors Kieron Moore and Niall MacGinnis, respectively.
    • The 1985 film has an entirely English cast, with the exception of Count Vronsky, who was played by American actor Christopher Reeve.
    • The 1997 Film:
      • Anna Karenina is portrayed by Sophie Marceau, who is French.
      • Vronsky, Levin, and Karenin are portrayed by English actors Sean Bean, Alfred Molina, and James Fox, respectively.
      • Kitty is portrayed by Mia Kirshner, a Canadian actress.
    • The 2012 film:
      • Keira Knightley, who is English, plays Anna Karenina.
      • Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Jude Law, both of them English, play Alexei Vronsky and Alexei Karenin, respectively.
      • Alicia Vikander, a Swedish actress, plays Kitty Shcherbatskaya.
      • Konstantin Levin is portrayed by Domhnall Gleeson, an Irish actor.
      • Matthew Macfadyen, an English actor, plays Oblonsky.
