Trivia / And Just Like That...

Go To

  • Channel Hop: The series is officially a hop to HBO Max from Sex and the City's run on traditional HBO.
  • Dawson Casting: Miranda's 17-year-old son Brady is played by 27-year-old Niall Cunningham. Sort of justified as there's a few shots of sex scenes with his girlfriend.
  • Died During Production: Willie Garson passed away from cancer during the filming of season 1. His character Stanford was Put on a Bus by having him leave his husband and move to Japan. His character is occasionally mentioned in season 2 and is eventually revealed to have become a Shinto monk.
  • Disowned Adaptation: Candace Bushnell, the writer of the original Sex and the City columns, who had nothing to do with this series, has disavowed it, expressing incredulity at the decision to depict the middle-aged Carrie, Charlotte, and Miranda as out-of-touch from the changing sexual and gender norms of the modern day.
  • Lying Creator: John Corbett claimed that he would appear as Aidan in "quite a few" episodes for the first season. Aidan wouldn't appear until the second season.
  • Queer Character, Queer Actor:
    • Sara Ramirez is bisexual, queer, and non-binary and uses they/them pronouns just like their character Che.
    • Miranda comes out as bi, reflecting her actress, the queer Cynthia Nixon.
  • Reality Subtext: Steve is partially deaf because David Eigenberg is actually battling hearing loss in real life.
  • The Red Stapler: Shares of Peloton plummeted 11% after the debut episode of the show, where Mr. Big has a fatal heart attack after riding a Peloton bike. (The drop was mostly caused by a prominent analyst downgrade of the stock that came out the same day, though the episode certainly didn't help things.) It got to the point that the company had to issue an official statement blaming the death on the character's unhealthy lifestyle instead of the bike (and saying that his exercise regimen probably increased his life), and release a parody commercial with Chris Noth and Jess King — an advertisement that itself had to be pulled after Noth was accused of sexual assault. Then Billions had a similar scene with one of the characters, with Peloton even being mentioned by name (according to them, without their approval), and referenced this episode to boot (the episode had been filmed months before, but the line "I'm not going out like Mr. Big" was added in post-production to exploit it).
  • Refitted for Sequel: The shocking plot twist of Mr. Big suffering a fatal heart attack in the first episode was actually conceived years earlier as the plot of the unmade third Sex and the City movie.
  • Role Reprise: Sarah Jessica Parker, Cynthia Nixon, and Kristin Davis all reprise their roles from Sex and the City as Carrie, Miranda, and Charlotte. In addition: Chris Noth as "Mr. Big", Mario Cantone as Anthony, Willie Garson as Stanford, David Eigenberg as Steve, and Evan Handler as Harry.
  • Separated-at-Birth Casting: Niall Cunningham looks like he could convincingly pass as Cynthia Nixon's real-life son.
  • Serendipity Writes the Plot: Mr. Big was originally supposed to make a cameo in the first season finale in a dream sequence after the character died in the first episode. However, due to sexual assault allegations against Chris Noth, the showrunners decided to edit him out of the episode rather than risk a controversy.
  • Wag the Director:
    • As revealed on a "Making of" documentary, Miranda would originally have begun an affair with Nya, but Cynthia Nixon felt it better Miranda be paired with Che.
    • According to the Writers Room podcast, Willie Garson (who was already terminally ill at the time of shooting) requested that Stanford be Put on a Bus instead of killed off since he felt that Carrie could not handle losing both Stanford and Big at once.
  • You Look Familiar:
    • Ajay Mehta, who plays Seema's father, appeared in Sex and the City as a busboy Samantha kisses.
    • William Abadie, who plays club owner Zed, appeared in Sex and the City as a salesman at Prada.
