- All-Star Cast: In addition to Page and Keener, James Franco stars in the film and Bradley Whitford plays a supporting role. A very young Evan Peters also appears as Ricky Hobbs.
- Dueling Movies: The Girl Next Door, a more extreme adaptation of the Likens case, based on the novel by Jack Ketchum, was also released in the same year. The main difference is that An American Crime did not receive a theatrical release due to a dispute with the distributor (it aired on Showtime instead), whereas The Girl Next Door did. Both movies received a fairly polarized critical response.
- Dyeing for Your Art: Elliot Page effectively starved himself for the role of Sylvia. When their dramatic weight loss was noticed by the director, Page told him "Sylvia wasn't eating."
- Playing Against Type: Tommy O'Haver had done comedy based films before An American Crime, such as Ella Enchanted.
