  • Inspiration for the Work: The Rance series was conceptualized when TADA decided he wanted to create an eroge in an uncommon setting, as most eroge at the time were set in the present day. To this end, he decided on a medieval fantasy setting, with a sex-obsessed jerk as the main character to make it all fit together.
  • Permanent Placeholder: TADA's programmer art tends to be featured prominently in Developer Rooms throughout the Rance series, and also serves the basis for Doodle Monsters, enemies with deliberately out-of-place sprites/models and often strange behavior.
  • Promoted Fanboy: Several Fan Translation creators were hired to work on the official releases of the games.
  • Schedule Slip: To say that Sengoku Rance's official, non-fan translation took a while to release since announcement is... an understatement at best. The game was more or less done, but even after being out of beta, many formatting errors were found and everything was put on hold causing the release to take nearly another year.
  • Serendipity Writes the Plot: Rance referring to a certain appendage of his as his "Hyper Weapon" originated as a way to bypass Japanese Censorship laws. However, the line fitted his character so much that it continued being used even after the laws were repealed.
  • Throw It In!: A peculiar musical version of the trope. During the production of the original "Rance II" Shade note  sent a copy of Auferstanden aus Ruinen (East Germany's national anthem) to Alicesoft's sound programmer instructing him to change it up a bit before adding it. Due to time constraints, only the tempo was changed which ended up becoming Rance's iconic "My Glorious Days" theme. Shade wanted to retire the tune after Rance 5D, but it was so associated with Rance's character by that point, that he got convinced to keep it for later installments of the series.
  • What Could Have Been: Sengoku Rance was originally intended to be a more traditional RPG, with Rance being allied with the Takeda Clan instead of the Oda Clan. Shingen was originally going to look almost identical to Rance, introducing a plotline where Rance was to serve as Shingen's body double, in a Whole-Plot Reference to Kagemusha. Oda was likely ultimately chosen when the game was changed to a grand strategy game, as Owari is closer to the center of the map, allowing for more open-endedness. The scrapped body double plot element is referenced in Rance 01, however, when Nami mentions growing up in the Takeda region, and remarks that Rance reminds her of her brother.
