  • Alan Smithee: The "John Thomas James" who has story credit on many episodes is executive producer Roy Huggins. "Return To Devil's Hole" features two fake writing credits, as the "Knut Swenson" who has teleplay credit is Marion Hargrove.
    • Huggins's pseudonym was taken from the names of his three sons.
  • Executive Meddling: Executive producer Jo Swerling, Jr. says that as soon as he learned of Pete Duel's death, he tried to end the show, but ABC wouldn't let him. The series was back in production 12 hours later.
  • Follow the Leader: The show was inspired by Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid.
  • The Other Darrin: Alias Smith and Jones has multiple examples.
    • Pete Duel committed suicide and was replaced by Roger Davis for the final season.
    • Sheriff Trevors was played by three different actors during the series' run.
    • The Opening Narration went back and forth between two actors. Ralph Story was The Narrator in the Pilot Movie. When the series began, Roger Davis took over from Story. When Davis replaced Duel as Hannibal Heyes, Story was brought back.
  • Referenced by...: In I Think I Love You, while telling Sharon about the men she's loved, Petra remembers her crush on Pete Duel.
  • What Could Have Been: George Peppard was in the running to replace Pete Duel before Roger Davis was chosen.
