Trivia / Aladdin Sane

  • Cut Song: A re-recording of "John, I'm Only Dancing", commonly dubbed the "sax version" due to its prominent saxophone part, was put together with the intention of including it on the album, only for it to be removed from the final tracklist. RCA Records would instead release it as a non-album single (without actually announcing that it was a new version), later including it on initial copies of Changesonebowie. The sax version would go on to become a staple of compilation albums and reissues.
  • Executive Meddling:
    • RCA Records and manager Tony Defries pushed to make Bowie's vocals on "Watch That Man" more audible rather than burying him in the instruments. However, after producer Ken Scott produced an alternate mix that acquiesced to their demands, everyone agreed that the buried vocals worked much better, fitting in with the song's setting at a raucous party.
    • Manager Tony Defries pushed to make the album cover use as many colors as possible, wanting to deliberately drive up printing costs so that RCA Records would be forced to go all out with their marketing.
  • What Could Have Been: A track called "Zion" was recorded during the album's sessions, but was left off the final tracklist and remains unreleased. According to biographer Kevin Caan, Rykodisc intended to include the song as a bonus track on their reissue of Aladdin Sane, only for Bowie to shoot it down. "Zion" was later further worked on during the sessions for Pin Ups before elements of it were cribbed for Diamond Dogs.
  • Working Title: The album was originally produced under the name Love Aladdin Vein, which Bowie changed in part due to it being a reference to drugs.
