Trivia / After the Gold Rush

  • Answer Song: "Southern Man" famously received one in Lynyrd Skynyrd's "Sweet Home Alabama." Doubles as Insult Backfire, since Neil himself said, "I'd rather listen to 'Sweet Home Alabama' than 'Southern Man' anyday." Also a case of Parody Displacement, since "Sweet Home Alabama" is much more famous and has lost its meaning by being used in so many completely irrelevant contexts, most notably for making fun of the incestuous Deep South stereotype.

    • Two British bands had big hits in both the UK and US with Cover Versions of songs from the album using starkly different arrangements from the originals—Prelude with their A Cappella version of the Title Track in 1974, and electronic dance group Saint Etienne's 1990 take on "Only Love Can Break Your Heart."
    • Volume 2 Issue 41 of the Swamp Thing comic book was titled "Southern Change", after the lyric "Southern change gonna come at last" from "Southern Man."
  • Throw It In!: The cover photo was taken in Greenwich Village near NYU, and photographer Joel Bernstein just happened to see the old woman walking down the sidewalk in the opposite direction of Young and quickly took the shot while she was in frame. He never got a chance to focus to his satisfaction, which is why he decided to solarize the pic for the cover. The full uncropped photo also includes Graham Nash watching Young and the woman on the edge of the frame.
