Trivia / A Trick of the Tail

Go To

  • Creator Backlash: Phil Collins isn't too big a fan of the video for the Title Track, featuring a miniature version of himself dancing atop Tony Banks' piano and resting on Steve Hackett's guitar (with exactly the kind of special effects you'd expect for 1976). In a 1994 interview with VH1, he called it one of the most embarrassing videos of his career.
  • Orphaned Reference: The intro and main riff in "Los Endos" reference "It's Yourself", a song cut from the album but included as the B-side to "Your Own Special Way" from Wind & Wuthering.
  • What Could Have Been:
    • At one point, Phil Collins suggested that the band become an instrumental-only group, since he doubted that anyone could fill Peter Gabriel's shoes.
    • Genesis intended to hire a new singer to fill in for the departed Peter Gabriel, with Phil Collins only occasionally providing vocals like usual ("Ripples" was even written with the intention of having Collins sing it). Around 400 people sent in submissions to replace Gabriel as vocalist, and a number of them made it to the audition stage. The only one of them to be known by name is Mick Stickland, who was rejected due to the material being outside of his vocal range. Ultimately, Collins was persuaded to perform a vocal track for "Squonk", at which point his bandmates immediately promoted him to lead vocalist.

Miscellaneous Trivia

  • Peter Gabriel paid a visit to his old bandmates during production and listened to the album. He ended up liking the results so much that he felt that the band no longer needed him, expressing his comfort in this belief during a Melody Maker interview.
