Trivia / A Tale of Two Cities

Go To

  • Acting for Two: In movie and televised versions, Charles Darnay and Sydney Carton are often, but not always, played by the same actor — sometimes with some make-up to give the effect of resemblance rather than identity, as in the 1980 BBC version. Of the available versions, the 1917 Fox silent version, the 1980 CBS version and the 1980 BBC version have the same actor portraying Darnay and Carton.note  The 1911 Vitagraph silent version, the 1935 MGM version, the 1958 British version, and the 1989 TV version have the two characters played by two separate actors.note
  • Adaptation Expansion: Likely for the sake of Catharsis Factor, most adaptations include a scene at the end in which Lucie becomes aware of the sacrifice that Carton has made for her.
  • Adapted Out: Darnay and Lucie's daughter Lucie often gets omitted from the many film and TV adaptations. The 1958 version has the child only existing inside her mother's womb, while the 1917 Fox version and the 1980 BBC Version show the Darnays becoming parents in a post-story epilogue (the latter has the child as a boy!). The 1917 Fox version, in light of this omission, changed Madame Defarge's eventual vendetta on the Manettes as For the Evulz.
  • Missing Episode: Eight of the 1965 miniseries' ten episodes are lost.
  • Role Reprise: Rosalie Crutchley played Madame Defarge in both the 1958 film and 1965 miniseries.
  • Uncredited Role: Brian Wilde as a man at the pillory outside the Old Bailey in the 1958 film.
