- Actor-Inspired Element: Jacob's story about a girl who dated him on a bet was improvised by Billy Bob Thornton and was something that actually happened to him.
- Creator's Oddball: The film is this for director Sam Raimi. The movie eschews Raimi’s usual dynamic camerawork, frenetic editing, and campy tones, all of which are present in Raimi’s horror, superhero, and even other styles of films such as The Quick and the Dead, in favor of a grounded directing style and tense atmosphere.
- I Want You to Meet an Old Friend of Mine: Bill Paxton and Billy Bob Thornton previously starred in One False Move together.
- Real-Life Relative: Bill Paxton's father plays the old man who confronts Paxton's character in the feed store ("Are you mean to tell me that there were five weeks last month?")
- Self-Adaptation: Scott B. Smith wrote both the book and the film based on it.
- What Could Have Been:
- Between 1994 and 1996, Ben Stiller was set to direct with Nicolas Cage starring. When Cage's salary began to affect the film's overall budget, Stiller walked away. The reins were then given over to John Dahl who later left the project to be replaced by John Boorman (who would have cast Natalie Portman as Sarah). Meanwhile, Emma Thompson was considering the part of Sarah Mitchell but, after a while, declined. Finally, Raimi replaced Boorman and production was set to go...three years after the rights were sold to Mike Nichols for a reported $250,000 (U.S.) "against" $750,000. Nichols would have cast John Cusack as Hank Mitchell.
- Brad Pitt and Juliette Lewis were attached to star, but left the film because of scheduling conflicts.
- Laura Dern and Nicole Kidman were considered for Sarah.
