Trivia / A Million Ways to Die in the West

Go To

  • Awesome, Dear Boy: Seth MacFarlane jokes that the whole point of the project was so he could make out with Charlize Theron on-camera, and who wouldn't want a shot at that?
  • California Doubling: Arizona is played by New Mexico.
  • Follow-Up Failure: Seth MacFarlane's previous film, Ted, was very well-received. This received a much more negative reaction.
  • Inspiration for the Work: The film originated as an inside joke between Seth MacFarlane and co-writers Alec Sulkin and Wesley Wild while they were watching Hang 'Em High. The joke evolved into "riffing on the idea of how dull, depressing, and dangerous it must have been to live in the Wild West."
  • Missing Trailer Scene: The bit with the doctor that accidentally killed his patient and the bit where Albert is in a hot air balloon over a burning forest is not in the film. The former is included in the unrated version, where the patient is revealed to be Albert's mother.
  • Older Than They Think: A lot of people didn't realize the moustache song was actually a contemporary (to the film) piece - with only marginally different lyrics.
  • Real Life Writes the Hairstyle: Charlize Theron wore a wig, as she'd shaved her hair off for Mad Max: Fury Road.
  • Role Reprise: Christopher Lloyd as Dr. Emmet Brown and Jamie Foxx as Django Freeman for their respective cameos.
  • Self-Adaptation: Seth MacFarlane wrote the novelisation himself.
  • Throw It In!: According to Seth MacFarlane, Jamie Fox's cameo as Django Freeman (and the "People Die at the Fair" Brick Joke) was not in the original script. It was only added during reshoots after test audiences reacted negatively to the "Runaway Slave" Shooting Gallery sequence.
MacFarlane: The Jamie Foxx bit, that was something that we just thought would be cool to have him in the movie, and also it was sort of a way to kind of buy back what is probably the edgiest gag in the movie, the shooting gallery. That shooting gallery is yet another example of the terribleness that was the 1880’s and I think that’s why in our test screenings, people were kind of giving us that one. They’re not really that offended because they recognize the context, and Albert points out that this is horrific. But it was something that helped to buy it back at the end of the day.
  • Wag the Director: Liam Neeson agreed to play the role of Clinch Leatherwood on the condition that he do a broad Irish accent.
