- California Doubling: The scenes in Russia were filmed in Budapest, Hungary.
- Celebrity Voice Actor: In the Japanese dub, Jack McClane is voiced by theater actor Sou Nozawa, who is the son of the late Nachi Nozawa, who voiced his father John in-film.
- Creator Backlash: Bruce Willis has since disowned this film.
- Creator's Pest: Bruce Willis and director John Moore really didn't want Lucy in the film — Willis because he thought each entry in the franchise should be able to stand on its own two feet, and Moore because he simply thought her character was pointless — but were forced to include her by the studio. As a result, Moore cut her entire role from the Director's Cut on DVD and Blu-Ray.
- Deleted Role: Mary Elizabeth Winstead's scenes as Lucy McClane were cut from the extended version.
- Fake American: Australian Jai Courtney playing an American faking to be Russian.
- Fake Russian: The Russian gang had no actual Russian members. The roles were played by Slovakian, Hungarian, Serbian, Mongolian and Ukrainian actors.
- Franchise Killer: The film's poor reception and underwhelming box-office put the Die Hard series on ice, with all proposed continuations of the franchise since then being in the form of either a prequel or a continuity reboot, and even Willis himself admitting he was unlikely to ever play John McClane again. However, he did play the role of John McClane for a commercial for the Die Hard battery, which would be the last time he played the role before his retirement in 2022.
- Missing Trailer Scene: The teaser trailer has a notable moment of Fanservice, featuring Irina getting off a motorbike and stripping off her catsuit (revealing lingerie underneath) and changing into a dress. In the actual film, this moment is (unbelievably) not shown on-screen, as it cuts from Irina beginning to unzip her suit to a scene outside, and her having already donned the dress by the time it cuts back.
- Refitted for Sequel: The idea of John teaming up with his son was originally intended for Live Free before going with his daughter instead.
- Star-Derailing Role: This was the first of many critical and financial bombs Bruce Willis starred in between 2013 and 2014, which – combined with allegations of difficult behavior while working on this film, The Expendables 2, Cop Out, and others – helped send his career into a headlong decline. By the end of the decade, Willis had been mostly relegated to voiceover work and direct-to-DVD action films, and he ended up retiring from acting altogether in 2022 due to what was revealed the following year to be early-onset dementia.
- What Could Have Been:
- When the TV series 24 was coming to an end and a movie was being considered, rumor has it that they were seriously considering making a Die Hard 5 that would actually be a cross-over, with Jack Bauer and John McClane teaming up to fight terrorists. The idea was eventually abandoned (assuming it was ever actually true in the first place) in favor of making a stand-alone 24 movie (which in turn was scrapped in favor of the miniseries 24: Live Another Day). But oh, What Could Have Been...
- James Badge Dale, Paul Dano, Ben Foster, Liam Hemsworth, Aaron Paul, Justin Timberlake, Paul Walker and Milo Ventimiglia were all considered for the role of Jack.
- Joe Cornish, Justin Lin and Nicolas Winding Refn were considered to direct.
- Working Title: Die Hard 24/7.
