Chapters previous to Anna's story, in chronological order
- 1648: Midwife Margaret Jones is put on trial for witchcraft. The heavily pregnant Alice Parsons witnesses her execution.
- 1789: Elizabeth, a lady's maid to the wealthy Abigail Rowe, wants to help her employer conceive and takes her to a midwife/folk healer. Nine months later, Abigail tells Elizabeth that her baby is a monster and to get rid of it.
- 1833: Betty Anderson is prescribed complete isolation and bed rest after giving birth. Six weeks later, her friend finds Betty's mental state has deteriorated.
- 1957: Judy Marshall, mother of four, finds herself pregnant again at the age of 42. A stranger turns up in her house, saying she heard Judy was "desperate."
- 1978: Viviana Torres, 16, finds out she is pregnant. Since she cannot get an abortion, her friend puts a spell on her to end the pregnancy.
- 1987: At a friend's suggestion, Io Preecher accepts a job as a surrogate.
- 2007: A pregnant Lucy Washington is approached by a woman named Josie who talks to her about spells, herbs, and dolls. The two hide dolls in places around the city where they won't be disturbed.
- 2018: Medical student Rayna Perkins is present at Central Park when J. Marion Sims's statue is knocked down. She is approached by a woman telling her that "[they] need doctors".
Anna's storyline
Anna Alcott, 36, visits Dr. Carla Hill seeking help for fertility.- Day 14: She goes to the clinic to get her eggs retrieved.
- Days 17-21: Anna has the embryo implanted. Shortly after, there's a break-in. In response, Anna and Dex move into a friend's house in Southampton and hire a bodyguard.
- Week 15: Anna suffers from massive bleeding and miscarries.
- Week 16: Anna feels the baby moving inside her. She learns that she was nominated for a Best Actress Academy Award.
- Week 35: Anna meets with Io and learns the identity of her stalker. Then she goes into labor. Dex drives Anna to the hospital, but they get into an accident. Later on, she gives birth to a baby girl.
The final chapter
- "Lena Kayne, many, many years later": Lena attends an infertility support group and shares her woes with famous actress and director Anna Victoria Alcott.
