  • Both Annie and Syrus are worried about losing their friends and going back to a Friendless Background. In Syrus' case Hassleberry's oblivious camaraderie with Jaden isn't helping any.

  • Chazz breaking down crying in chapter 5 after Jack offers him some genuine kindness and support. This is the first sign of just how badly his brothers' treatment of him has really affected him.
  • Chapter 6 has the story of Violet's first boyfriend, Mike. They were dating and Violet was happy enough but feels that she overlooked some warning signs. One day after school she went to see him only to find he was kissing her best friend, which broke her heart. Violet was heartbroken and is still struggling with the hurt to this day.
    • Bastion's mother Katai shares with Violet that something similar happened to Bastion's father, Hiro. He'd been dating someone only to find she had been having an affair. It took him a while to even consider getting close to Katai the same way and he blamed himself for how things went.
  • Chapter 11 has Annie worried that her fainting spells are an indicator of much worse health problems. Later chapters will show that she is sadly being Properly Paranoid.
  • In chapter 12 Chazz is confused as to why the Rhodes want custody of him, openly declaring that he thinks no one wants him because the only people he's ever been close to have cut him out of their lives and most of them fell into solid Jerkass territory so he doesn't know how healthy friendships or family bonds actually work.
  • Chapter 13 reveals the reason for why Chazz's parents are absent in his life and it is not pretty. His mother developed cancer while she was pregnant with him and refused treatments to avoid any birth complications. By the time Chazz was born the cancer had progressed too far and nothing could be done. His father fell into a depression after this and eventually wound up committing suicide on Chazz's first birthday. Making it worse is that was Chazz's first memory and he's been blaming himself for their deaths for years.
  • Chapter 15 has a bad case of Mood Whiplash at the end when everyone is playing some football only for them to see Annie has fainted again, much to their concern.
  • Chapter 16 begins with everyone panicking over Annie's fainting, which is worse than the last times. Violet and Syrus are so shaken they can barely process what's happening, much less move.
    • Chazz feels bad about the whole thing happening the first time he's properly gone to a park and even voices worries that they might lose Annie. The guy has been through a rough life and it really shows here.
    • The group get to meet Yugi and his friends, their heroes, but it couldn't be under worse circumstances.
    • Violet begins to think of herself as a curse on people because after what happened with Mike and her best friend her other friends left her and now Annie may well be dying as far as she knows. The poor girl actually runs off, thinking that she's just meant to be alone in the world. Bastion follows after and is heartbroken over his girlfriend going through such a harrowing time, even breaking down in tears himself.
