Tear Jerker / Word of Honor

Go To

Tian Ye Ke has its memorable sad moments, but as Word of Honor is a Chinese drama, and that it has a wider cast of side characters to care about, some scenes were added in to amp up the angst.

"It's too late to save... who I want to save."

  • The scene where it's revealed Zhou Zishu has stabbed himself with the nails. He picks up a knife and cuts at one of the wounds, then hallucinates Jiuxiao in the mirror, so he puts down the knife and tells the reflection he deserves the pain for everything he's done while Cry Laughing.
  • The massacre of the Mirror Lake Sect and the death of Uncle Li, where Chengling is seeing everyone he loves die one by one for him or for the Glazed Armour.
  • Shen Shen's and Deng Kuan's grievances over Zhang Yusan and his children, with Shen Shen being the most emotional.
  • Gu Xiang bullying Chengling into eating, which makes him eat yes— but while crying over her words about him being too weak to avenge his sect.
  • Chengling starting to cry when Zhou Zishu departs for good, if that wasn't enough, Chengling reminds Zhou Zishu of the time where he was comforting a crying young Qin Jiuxiao, Zhou Zishu looks hurt as well.
  • Gao Xiaolian tending to Deng Kuan as she talks to him, begging him to wake up while also telling him to forgive her if she marries Chengling.
  • The deaths of the Four Sages of Anji, starting with Pei Feng choosing the Glazed Armour over his life, to Du Yuqian committing suicide saying that there is no point in living without a Zhījǐ.
    • Their deaths were also for nothing, as the piece they had was one of the duplicates made by Wen Kexing, which made him feel responsible.
  • The scene where Wen Kexing is trying to dig graves for the bodies of the Four Sages of Anji, Wen Kexing is visibly overwhelmed and gets worse when Zhou Zishu confronts him.
  • Liu Qianqiao revealing her story with Yu Qiufeng and her inner thoughts of not being able to let him go.
  • The entire first half of Episode fourteen, with Wen Kexing finding out about the nails and therefore, Zhou Zishu's limited time, he tries to beg Zhou Zishu into taking the offer of living for ten years, and then laments about how it was always too late to do anything he wanted, and how it's too late to save the person he wanted to save.
    • On a rewatch with Episode nineteen and twenty in mind, this scene gets more devastating when the audience knows that Wen Kexing truly never had anything good in his life stay, and that the person in one of the rare moments of his childhood is about to die.
  • One of the Adaptional Angst Upgrade scenes is Zhou Zishu snapping at Wen Kexing, scolding him for being upset on his behalf and wishes they had never met if Wen Kexing wanted him to live against his will.
  • Gu Xiang finding out about the raid of the Unfaithful Manor, showing her confused and upset at the deaths of the girls and Hong Lu who didn't do anything to be killed.
  • The bridge scene, with both of Gu Xiang and Wen Kexing acting unlike the characters in the past episode, Wen Kexing voice cracks as he speaks and he doesn't seem to be aware of anything a panicking Gu Xiang says, only ridden by the fact that "he's about to die".
  • Gu Xiang starting to catch feelings and getting worried about Cao Weining.
  • Shen Shen begging Gao Chong when Gao Chong announces that he'll hand over the Glazed Armour while telling Shen Shen to take care of his daughter.
  • Gao Xiaolian finding out about her father's death by hearing how his corpse has been torn apart.
  • The scene with Drunk Wen Kexing and Zhou Zishu, with Zhou Zishu not handling the talk nicely at first.
Zhou Zishu: I can't stand your pretentious actions, with a mask and not being truthful at all.
Wen Kexing: I... I'm just... I'm just scared...
  • The reveal of Wen Kexing's past and identity, he shakes and cries as he hears both about his parents suffering and Long Que's sacrifices in trying to protect the Wen family as well.
  • Ye Baiyi, the usually snarky and stoic character crying at Rong Xuan's death and by extension, the Wen's family attempts to save him.
  • Long Que's death scene, with him begging for Zhou Zishu to kill him instead of dying chained. Chengling trying to plead him to stay alive and Wen Kexing bowing to his corpse and thanking him for all what he did for his parents.
  • The flashback scene is mostly bittersweet, but one part sticks out is Wen Kexing, who is a child at the time, trying to hit and stop Qin Huaizhang (a skilled Master who Wen Kexing just saw kill six people at once) from "hurting" his dad. Wen Kexing is carried away by his mother while he still reaches out with his arm, showing that he's deeply traumatised.
  • Wen Kexing confronting Shen Shen about his parent's fate while repeating the sentence it's too late with a distant look until he breaks down.
  • The conversation between Gu Xiang and Wen Kexing about her feelings for Cao Weining, where she expresses her emotions of loving him, yet confused and scared of his rejection if he finds out about her identity as an Amethyst Fiend. Wen Kexing is worried and sad at the state Gu Xiang is in while trying to comfort her.
    • This conversation also affects Wen Kexing as he shares the same fears with Zhou Zishu.
  • Not directly a Tear Jerker, but when Zhou Zishu realises he is losing his senses, he laughs it off and hides that fact from Wen Kexing and Chengling, not wanting to cause them hurt.
  • Zhou Zishu opening up to Wen Kexing after waking up from his dream about his past, he is practically weeping through the conversation.
  • Despite being the antagonists for half of the series Tao Hong and Lu Liu, one can't help but feel sorry for them, alongside Tao Hong wanting to die with her husband. Even Gao Xiaolian pleads for them.
  • Gu Xiang accepting her death at the hands of Shen Shen for Cao Weining, while also asking him to not reveal her identity to Cao Weining and revealing her true feelings about him.
  • All of the dialogue between Wen Kexing and Qin Huaizhang's grave.
  • Wen Kexing's expressions of shame as Zhou Zishu defends him with no hesitation from Ye Baiyi, and Zhou Zishu's willingness to die with Wen Kexing.
Zhou Zishu: If you want to kill, just kill both of us.
  • Throughout the series, Xier is still unsure of Zhao Jing's nature, but when Zhao Jing hits him phyiscally, Xier tears up and likens himself to Liu Qianqiao .
  • Episode twenty nine, considering nothing bad has happened in the last few episodes, it throws everything at the watcher. Han Ying's death that was also avoidable and Wen Kexing breaking down near death. In the other side, the Gentle Wind Sword Sect is overrun by Drug Men.
  • Chengling being scared and trying to no avial wake Wen kexing up to "fix" the situation.
Zhang Chengling: No! Master, I won't listen to you. When my dad talked to me the last time, he had the same expression as yours now. I'd rather die with you than live alone.
  • The truth of Wen Kexing being the Ghost Valley being revealed to Cao Weining, with Gu Xiang affirming it, a tear falls from his eye.
  • Young Wen Kexing feeling responsible for his parents death as he was the one to lead Zhao Jing to their hideout, he begs his mom to hit him in a child-like manner in a way to fix his mistake.
  • Episode thirty-five. All of it. Especially Wen Kexing holding Gu Xiang as she dies, telling her, "I'm not your master. I'm your older brother", and promising to kill Mo Huaiyang for her.
