- The death of TJ's father, especially considering he died to protect Heidi.
- Made even more heartbreaking when TJ mentions that he knew his dad was dead because he had felt the same thing with the baby deer he tried to save.
- Heidi's attempt to scrub the brown off her skin, and how she hurt herself doing it.
- Alicia's whole story. She fell deeply in love with a black man and he got her pregnant, then he left her without any explanation, she ended up in an abusive relationship with Rich, and both her and her daughter were subsequently treated like crap.
- As a matter of fact, Chris's story counts as well- he was abused and brain-damaged by his mother's boyfriend, and then he lost the one person who made him happy, his half-brother, Brian. To top it all off, Mike Barbour and others bully him regularly for these reasons.
- The sheer injustice of what happened to Kristen Sweetwater- Mike Barbour hit her, tried to pressure her into sex, and hit her again, and he'll never get arrested for it because Kristen won't report it.
