Tear Jerker / Watership Down (1999)

Go To

  • Primrose, having just been freed of Efrafa, is made aware that her former home of Redstone is now barren when Fiver has another vision:
    • Primrose is left distraught and angry at Fiver for what he said. Her dream of seeing her home and friends was the only thing keeping her going for all that time in Efrafa. This causes her to return to Redstone, determined to prove Fiver wrong. Only Fiver wasn't wrong; Redstone succumbed to an illness long ago with only Captain Broom surviving, and it's implied that the ghosts of those who died are now bound to the place until Primrose gives up her dream of home. With a heavy heart, Primrose lets go of her dream, freeing her friends' spirits from Redstone and leaves everything she ever knew behind.
    • Fiver, having just hurt Primrose, was then told off by Hawkbit for his inconvenient visions, making Fiver thinks he's cursed. He now thinks that his visions aren't warnings, but that when he has one, he causes it to become real. This causes him to think he's responsible for Sandleford's destruction, Bigwig almost dying, and the war with Efrafa, and he runs off to protect his friends, almost getting eaten by a weasel. It's only when Hazel tells him that Redstone had been barren for seasons (long before they ever met Primrose) does he finally come to his senses.
  • Bark's entire story. She lost all of her family and friends, and when she tries to befriend other animals, they are terrified of her because she's a predator. Fiver asks her why she didn't reach out, only to realise she did; she approached them offering apples, flayrah, but they ran all the same. And when Hazel and the others come to "rescue" Fiver, they end up beating her while she refuses to fight back and just pleads for them to stop. Even after Fiver clears the air, Bark is left crying how she's sorry that she was born the wrong species.
  • In the same episode, the reason Fiver was kidnapped was because Pipkin, seeing Bark, ran off in terror. For much of the episode he thinks Fiver is dead because of him, which is not at all helped by Bigwig's reaction to learning about this.
  • Woundwort, having failed to invade Watership Down the first time, returns to Efrafa mad and confused. He thinks Campion betrayed him, but still saved his life. Slowly he pieces together that his rule, that of fear, was wrong and that he should rule with compassion as he finally realizes it was kindness that turned Campion against him, but also drove Campion to save him. But he realizes this too late as Hazel leads an army to destroy Efrafa to avenge Campion. Woundwort rushes to the battle to beg for peace, only for the sky itself to strike him down and toss him into the abyss. When he awakens, all that remains of Efrafa was a smoldering ruin, reaffirming his hatred for Hazel and breaking his mind entirely, causing him to dedicate himself to destruction of not just Watership Down, but of all creation. The worst part is that Woundwort later points this out to Campion, noting that Hazel is now directly responsible for this, no matter how justified he is.
  • After the battle of Efrafa, Blackberry is left morose as she still feels that Campion lives. Unfortunately Campion made Pipkin promise not to tell her, resulting in Blackberry finding evidence that he's alive, but everyone telling her she's just seeing things. It ultimately culminates with her finding out about Pipkin keeping the secret, and running away from everyone just to find Campion herself.
  • Silverweed taking the magic from Hannah:
    • It ages him by years as the price for it's use. Bear in mind, rabbits in this universe are so short lived they measure ages by seasons, not years. Silverweed had only been free of fear and pain for just a few weeks, and he ended up giving up the rest of his life to save his friends.
    • The reason he did this was because of a talk he and Fiver had; Fiver wanted to save the warren but didn't want to lose Hannah to do it and would rather take her place, he just didn't know how. Silverweed, however, did...
