Tear Jerker / Vertigo

• Madeleine pretty much goes through hell for most, if not all of the movie. Event's revealed that Judy turned out to be Gavin's partner in crime and accomplice in Gavin killing his wife and making it look like suicide, she tried to call Scottie and inform him on what was really happening, but Gavin held onto her and covered her mouth so she couldn't warn Scottie.
• There's just something so depressing about Scottie being super attracted to "Madeleine" — who had never even existed— and being unable to love Judy for who she really is. She's clearly having not happy about helping to kill Madeleine.
  • Also, Scottie had taken Judy to Ernie's because it was where he had first met "Madeleine", but barely paid any attention to Judy as he was more interested in a gray-suited woman resembling Madeleine. Yep, his love for Madeleine was that strong.
    • Or, an alternate to the above, Scottie was trying to be a gentleman by taking Judy to dinner, but due to a gray-suited woman resembling Madeleine showing up, it pushes him back into his guilt. And with how Judy notices the gray-suited woman and then she looks at Scottie, she has a look of realization of how much she's hurt him and tilts her head down in shame. That's right, even though she was "just the tool" for Gavin Elster, she recognizes the harm she's caused.
• There are several reasons the "makeup scene" is a tearjerker. Not only does it show that John only loves Judy as her alter-ego and, it also brings back bad memories of when Gavin had done this to her as part of his plan. Plus, Judy had a chance to get out of Scottie's poor relationship at any time. Nope, she continued to let Scottie push her around and mold her in Madeleine. Man, they managed to make a Femme Fatale sympathetic.
• The entire ending of the film is one for both Judy and Scottie.
  • It's one for Judy because she had already gone through a lot in the film, plus being at the mission tower again triggered memories of her last visit and cause her to suspect something was up. She also knew she would never be able to satisfy Scottie's needs, now that he knew the truth about the murder, and she jumped to her own death or fell accidentally to her death (depending on how you interpret what happened between the moment she pulled away from Scottie and the moment she screamed).
  • It's also one for Scottie, because he had just realize the love of his life had never even existed and her supposed love helped to murder the real one. And then he had to witness Judy die for real. The man got paralyzed after seeing Judy's fake death (and Madeleine's real death), just imagine how he's going to react to seeing Judy die for real— and the closest thing he's had to Madeleine.
• Midge's final scenes also count (not including the alternate ending). You see her visiting Scottie after his psychotic break, talking to him and trying to get him to laugh with no results. She tries to assure him that she's still there for him, but doesn't get a response. When she talks to the Doctor, before she turns to slowly walk off, the look on her faces shows that she realizes that as much as she cares about him, she can't help him.
• When you consider what everything Scottie goes through and what Gavin sets up, the entire film is one long series of traumas that you can't help but feel sorry for him.
• It's easy to miss during the The Oner Big Kiss scene in after Judy's makeover, but during the kisses Scottie and Judy share, there is a brief moment where Scottie hugs her with a slightly pained expression on his face. It's not just the fact that Scottie has his Lost Lenore back. In that brief moment shows that he's missed her and it's enough to cause a tear to form.
