Tear Jerker / Ugly Betty

Go To

  • Daniel falling for Sofia, thinking he's got the perfect woman at last...and then on national television, she reveals that the entire relationship was nothing but a ploy by her to promote her book on how a woman can easily get a man to fall for her fast. Daniel's slowly breaking look realizing Sofia never loved him at all is far worse than the public humiliation of this.
Daniel: We, uh, we met and we fell in love.
Sofia: Ah, actually, Daniel, you fell in love. I mean, I have to tell you, as much as I like you, you're a terrific guy but right now, I just want to focus on my career, not my relationship. (takes off her engagement ring and hands it back) Thank you for being such a good sport.
  • Betty's Broken Pedestal moment with Sofia, realizing this supposed great boss is, in her own way worse than anyone at Mode.
Sofia: I see a lot of myself in you.
Betty: Well, I don't see any of myself in you. Here's my article on working at Mode. Funny thing I found out researching it. Those people might be superficial but they know it. And they don't pretend to be anything more than they are. I actually think I fit in better there than I will here. I quit.
  • Betty's scene with Wilhelmina in 4x11.
  • If Hilda crying at the end of Season 1 wasn't bad enough, the ending of "How Betty got her Grieve Back" was even worse. For the entire episode, Hilda has been spending the day in her room with Santos. He has a bandage around his stomach, so you assume that he survived getting shot. And then this conversation happens.
Santos: We can't stay in here forever. I think I'd better go.
Hilda: No. No. Not yet. We just need one more day. One more day.
Santos: It's going to be okay.
    *Betty knocks at the door*
Betty: Hey, I know you probably don't want to but any chance you want to come down and help Justin and I make dinner?
Hilda has been sitting alone in the dark the entire time.
    Hilda: He's gone, Betty.
  • What starts off as a fairly humorous exchange between Amanda and Betty switches to this.
    Amanda: Wait... your mother died?
    Betty: Yeah.
Amanda: How did you ever get over that?
    Betty: I didn't. I haven't.
  • The last scene of "Curveball", when Matt walks up to meet Betty and see her kissing Henry.
  • Alexis's departure.
  • Molly's death.
  • Betty finds her grandmother, and learns she has Alzheimer's. She thinks Betty is her daughter (Betty's mom) and asks forgiveness for treating her poorly after running away with Ignacio.
  • Daniel's behavior in much of Level (7) With Me is so absurd and over the top, it's funny...until his hallucination of Molly drives home just how desperate and devastated he is.
  • Wilhelmina's realization Nico's entire "murder frame job" was all a scam to extort money from her mother. Worse is Nico's reaction that makes Wilhelmina realized how much of her daughter's behavior is her own fault.
Wilhelmina: Why, Nico? What did I do to deserve this?
Nico: What did you do? Where do I even start? How about sending me away when you were too busy with your career to even give a damn about me? How many times did I see you growing up, Mother? How many holidays did we spend together? Are you surprised? Really, I thought you'd be proud of me. Because after all you did to screw me up...I'm still my mother's daughter.
Wilhelmina: (whispering) Get Out!. I never want to see you...again.
Nico: You'll get what you want...Mom. You always do.
  • The very last moments of the series. As Betty walks off into her new life in London after speaking to Daniel, the title text appears on the screen. However, "Ugly" fades away, leaving just "Betty" in the middle, before the cut to credits.
