Tear Jerker / The Remains of the Day

  • When Stevens is so absorbed with his butlery that he isn't able to really care about his father's death. Not only that, he seems to take considerable pride in it when reflecting on the fact later.
  • The scene where Miss Kenton, upset by Stevens' lack of reaction to news of her engagement, cruelly claims that she and Mr. Benn make fun of him on their dates. Though he makes an appearance of being mildly confused, it's impossible to think that he isn't deeply hurt.
  • In the scene where Stevens' car breaks down, the townspeople take him for an aristocrat. While Stevens doesn't lie, he does nothing to correct them from this perception. The way the scene plays out underscores how Stevens envied people of high social standing all of his life and wanted to be someone of status himself, an utterly unattainable goal given both the strictures of British class structure and his own obsequious personality.
