Tear Jerker / The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1

Go To

  • When Effie gives her Cinna's design for the Mockingjay outfit, Katniss sadly asks "He's dead, isn't he?" Effie whispers "Yes" and shows her the message he left her:
"I'm still betting on you! - Cinna"
  • Katniss walking through the ruins of District 12 for the first time.
  • The District 8 hospital...and what happens to it.
    • Katniss's Rousing Speech. Sure, it was awesome, but it happened after Snow bombed a hospital. What does it is that Katniss does the whole thing pretty near tears herself.
  • Gale recounting what happened when District 12 was bombed and saying that he should have dragged people out to save them. Katniss flat out tells him that he's the only reason there's anything or anyone left of District 12.
  • Some of Finnick's first words of the movie: 'I wish we were all dead.'
  • Snow's granddaughter, who had put her hair in a braid because she wanted to be like Katniss, starts undoing it when her grandfather makes a speech that all symbols on the Mockingjay are forbidden.
  • The lumberjacks who lead their escorts into an explosive trap...by suddenly running up the trees at a whistled signal. Again, for emphasis: they started running from trained killers at their BACKS, all armed with assault rifles and all of whom who can shoot-to-kill at will without repercussion.
  • The people of District 5 singing "Hanging Tree" as they march towards their Heroic Sacrifice to blow up a hydroelectric dam.
    • Made doubly horrifying when you realize that even if they survived running unarmed at the hail of bullets, the ensuing flood when the dam blows will surely outrun them. Maybe depending on whether or not there was meant to be a Time Skip before their bombs actually went off.
    • And for a third: We find out from the prequel book that the song was penned by an old friend of President Snow's, Lucy Gray - the 10th Victor of the Hunger Games. Imagine how he must have felt that the District 5 people were singing 'her' song.
  • Katniss's more desperate reaction after every one of Peeta's broadcasts and seeing how more detreated both his body and spirit are with each ensuing.
  • Peeta's last broadcast, when they jack into the feed and play Katniss singing. Especially heartbreaking because he's been tortured extensively at that point and it shows, and the hijacking process is well underway, yet he still responds to her. One wonders what exactly they did to him after that since he's implied to have been saved fairly soon thereafter and at that point is fully hijacked.
Peeta: Katniss? Katniss are you there?
  • Finnick and Annie's reunion edges into this for book readers who know what is coming in Mockingjay Part 2.
  • Katniss being attacked by Peeta. She's clearly emotionally shattered and doesn't really fight back, instead just taking the abuse almost as if she wants to die.
    • For that matter, the revelation of Peeta himself. As Katniss, and the camera, move around him, not only has he been brutally beaten, but he also seems horribly emaciated, far from how he appeared just a few scenes previously. And the last scene of the film, as Katniss discovers him locked in confinement, strapped to a gurney and struggling like a raging animal.
