- Eleanor weaves a lie to the others about her tiny beloved home, which doesn't actually exist and which she makes up using details she's noticed along the road to Hill House. Far from being deceptive or manipulative, it's actually quite pathetic, revealing how very empty Eleanor's real life is. She's not lying so much as she's describing the home she wishes she had.
- As Eleanor is on the verge of leaving Hill House, Theo breaks down, saying she was afraid Eleanor wasn't going to say goodbye to her and making her promise that one day, they'll meet again and have the picnic they were planning. Considering that Theo tends to be coy and capricious about her feelings (and that Eleanor believed Theo was snubbing her in favor of Luke), the moment of heartfelt sincerity is genuinely touching. It becomes even more heartbreaking when Eleanor dies only minutes later.
