Being a movie about death, The Frighteners can be fairly tear-jerking when it isn't being terrifying or funny.

- Frank and Debra's "dream house". It was left uncompleted after the latter's death, acting as a painful representation of how Frank hasn't truly lived his life since Debra's untimely death. They had their lives planned out, and in the present day, that house still stands as a reminder of what might've been.
- Frank's Heroic BSoD in the middle of the movie. As Dammers trudges up the memory of his wife's death and accuses him of being behind the murders, he's shown trembling and covering his face in grief. Afterwards, he's left catatonic, and his powers briefly stop working because he's lost faith in them. Poor guy.
- Flashbacks show that Frank and Debra's marriage wasn't all sunshine and rainbows, with Frank building a basketball court for himself instead of a garden for his wife like he had promised. This, however, becomes heartwarming when Lucy visits the house and sees that Frank replaced the basketball court with a garden shrine for his beloved wife. Somewhat mitigated in both ways when Ray sees the garden and is only looking at the hoop in disrepair, showing how he's in the same mindset Frank used to be.
- Frank and Debra are also shown arguing twice before the accident.
