Tear Jerker / The Cranberries

This Irish alternative rock band has its fair share of sad songs.

  • "Linger" is just heartbreaking, one of the alt-rock era's saddest songs.
  • "Them" is quite haunting, a stark song about coping with abuse that offers hope to the listener. It can quite easily bring the listener to tears, especially if they have experienced abuse themselves.
  • Perhaps even worse is the title track from No Need to Argue with only an organ and vocals for instrumentation. It's like listening to a funeral.
  • "Ode to My Family", especially if you've been in a situation that makes you away from your own parents.
  • "Dying in the Sun", a Lonely Piano Piece.
  • "Zombie", under the raw and unapologetic anger, is sad as well, lamenting the senseless loss of lives and how neither the people nor the situation really changed "since 1916."
    • The song was written as a response to the Second Warrington Bombing, a 20 February 1993 attack on Cheshire, England, conducted with IRA support. It killed two children. The band was essentially saying they had had enough of The Troubles.
It's the same old theme since 1916
In your head, in your head, they're still fighting
  • "Bosnia" which, much like "Zombie" was written about a horrible and tragic conflict, in this case The Bosnian War.
  • "Will You Remember?"
    I won't remember the dress I wore
    I won't remember champaigne
I won't remember the things that we swore
I will just love you in vain
