  • Charis begging the gods for her father's life. He had just been taken away by the tax farmer and imperial soldiers to be held until execution because he tried to protect her for standing up to try to protect him. She had twisted her ankles and scrapped her knees when the soldiers knocked her unconscious and can barely walk properly. But her father had told her if she begged the gods for 13 x 13 x 13 times the gods would grant her wish. So she walks back and forth from the edge of the plateau and the ruin of the shrine at the center. She keeps tripping and falling and hurt herself even more, but still gets up and continue. She doesn't know that would be nearly physically impossible for a healthy human adult to do all in one go, let alone an injured and hungry child.
    • Being unable to stand seeing her like that forces Hamil to break his normal facade and pretend to be a demon to talk to her. In that conversation we get additional example of the pains and of not only The Chains of Commanding but when you have to do everything by yourself behind the scenes. And then Karis' answer that if someone has to die in place of her father, let it be herself.
  • Izebel's entire back story when the memories are released from the Sword of Melqart when Hamil struck the fatal blow. She was forced as a young child to act as a spy for the Holy Church for the sake of her ill mother. As her mother's illness progressed, she didn't even know her daughter. When she died, Izebel confessed everything to Hasdrubal and asked for death. He instead made her, a very talented soldier and bureaucrat, his personal secretary, then his son's guardian, and then a member of the Barcid Party. She loved him and would've followed him if he really rebelled against The Empire. But Hasdrubal knew such a rebellion had one chance to succeed, and the time is not right and he has no chance of victory if he rebels now. After failing at peaceful reform, he still would not rebel. When The Empire comes to get him, his last orders to her was to pretend she had crushed his "rebellion" and use that to become the Governor-General of Hispania. She is then for seven years to prevent the encroachment of the Holy Church. If someone, and both of them knew it would be his son and her ward Hamil, stood up to The Empire in seven years, she is to fight him, to test who to entrust the future to: Whether people should resign to their own fate and be ruled by others/the Holy Church/Watos as she believes, or whether they should fight and struggle for a better life and future as he does. In short, she is ordered by her superior whom she loves to betray him and side with the enemy for seven years, and then fight with his son whom she had been a guardian and mother-figure to in order to make sure he will be strong enough to beat The Empire. And no one would know the truth but her. She would be cursed and hated by everyone who knew her and everyone from Hispania. And she would have to continue to pretend to be loyal to The Empire and fight against her own country. No one could endure that and not become an Ax-Crazy Death Seeker. And as she lay dying with everyone desperately trying to heal her to no avail, everyone's apologizing to her and she also apologizes to everyone, and calmly states she has carried out Hasdrubal's last orders and can now join her beloved commander.
  • Hamil's Anguish Declaration Of Love shows just how much his time prior to the beginning of the story had scarred him. Loosing his father, playing the fool, being beaten and humiliated while watching his people suffer completely broke his heart. Before Tart showed up, revenge was his only true motivation. The Blood Lust he regularly suppresses is not entirely Melqart's. When Tart demonstrate that she would rather be torn apart and eaten by Melqart rather than kill Hamil to save herself, Hamil runs himself through with his sword. His last words to Tart before loosing conciousness is to tell everyone that he didn't turn into a bloodthirsty monster. He died a human. He gets better.
  • Monomachus dying in defense of Tartetos, saying it's his time to make up for his mistake of not being about to protect Hasdrubal and see through Hamil's Obfuscating Stupidity to support him. His ghost afterwards coming to say goodbye to Hamil, telling him he was actually very happy when Hamil playing the fool asked him to teach him farming instead of war was actually very happy to hear that because he liked farming more than war. Then Hamil breaks down, saying he knew Monomachus would go back and get himself killed, but abandoning Tartetos was the only way to win. But for victory he had to let Monomachus die. Tart offers some comforting words. He got turned into a dragon by the dragons.
  • Tarte taking Metatronius' death curse in the form of a Wave-Motion Gun for Hamil. Hamil looses it, first transforming into Melqart and destroying Metatronius, then absolutely breaks down, loosing hope and absolutely breaks down. She also gets better
