- The very first scene of the series, where we see Miku mourning the death of Hibiki at her grave. Sure, it turns out she's not actually dead, but for first-time viewers, it's quite the shock to see that the future of the protagonist is apparently rather short-lived.
- The attack on the stadium. So many people end up dying due to the Noise, with Hibiki ending up being one of the few survivors. Even worse is that Kanade had to sacrifice her life singing her Swan Song just so she can be certain that Hibiki and Tsubasa would continue living.
- Tsubasa's utter frustration at seeing Kanade's gear in the hands of somebody else, especially an untrained and unfocused newbie like Hibiki, is rather painful. She may not be completely justified in treating Hibiki terribly, but her pain is still understandable.
- In the final season, the concert attack is replicated on purpose, with Tsubasa helpless as thousands of people die around her (and one civilian brutally murdered before her eyes).
