Tear Jerker / Sarah Brightman

Go To

This British soprano with an angelic voice has sung some very moving songs.

  • "Wishing You Were Somehow Here Again" from The Phantom of the Opera, sung in character as Christine as she tries to move past her father's death. It could be considered Harsher in Hindsight when you find out that Brightman's own father committed suicide in 1992.
  • "The Second Element", about missing a soulmate.
  • Though it could be considered Narm, "Johnny Wanna Live" (a cover of a Sandra song) is about the very real issue of animals being abused and tested on. Johnny "stands for every creature's pain".
  • There are those who believe "Time to Say Goodbye" is a sad song because of its English title (it's often played at funerals), but the Italian lyrics actually are about setting off with one's lover to seek new horizons, so it's really the good kind of tears.
  • "Only An Ocean Away", about a relationship that fell apart because the other person "always wanted more" and would go off chasing illusions. Whether the ocean that separates the couple is literal or figurative is left to the listener's interpretation, but either way it's sad.
    There's an ocean between us
You know where to find me
Just reach out and touch me
I feel you in my own heart
    More than a lifetime
    It seems like forever
    But I'll always remember
    You're only an ocean away
  • "The Last Words You Said", a duet with Richard Marx. The words referenced in the title were "Love me now forever", and the song describes the pain of waiting for the person to return.
  • "He Doesn't See Me"/"She Doesn't See Him", which is about someone being unnoticed by their love interest. They admire the object of their affection from afar, but hide from them because they feel they're unworthy of their attention.
  • In "Free", the singer reflects on her choice to leave a former lover. Though insisting throughout that she made the right decision, she still spies on him and his new girlfriend, apparently unable to let go.
  • "Symphony", in which attempts to salvage a romantic relationship fail. It sounds as if Sarah is on the verge of tears when she sings what are likely the most poignant lyrics of the song:
    If everything is broken
Then it's better that we give up
And remember how we once had
    Something beautiful
  • "Colder Than Winter" describes a breakup between the singer and their lover:
    Couldn't make you love me
    Couldn't give you any more
    It's colder than winter
    Since you closed the door
