Tear Jerker / Sanitarium

Go To

  • The Mansion level in Sanitarium is a Tear Jerker, mostly due to music and the flashbacks. However, like almost everything else in this game, it is also Nightmare Fuel.
  • The cutscene that occurs between chapters 3 and 4, where we finally find out why Max's mother was summoning him.
  • Maria Santiago in chapter 2. Have tissues handy when you ask her about the pumpkin patch.
  • The backstories of Carol Driscoll and "Mother"
    • Mother may be the most sympathetic of the villains, due to this.
  • Chapter 8 (The Lost village): the witch doctor's wife is devastated after the demon brutally killed her two sons. She's also well aware her husband plans to offer his own life to save the village, but she's unable to change his mind, and is only allowed to watch as her husband walks to his death. Despite the noble intentions behind the witch's sacrifice, the old woman is still distraught at the thought of losing her loved ones and being left all alone. An understandably selfish, but very human trait. If Olmec visits her after the witch doctor's death, he'll find the crone lying dead on the ground, deducing she poisoned herself to join her family in death.
    • Olmec would first meet the crone preparing a potion, which she reassures him is merely a balm for her aching bones. Putting two and two together, it's probable she lied to him and was actually preparing the poison she'd use to take her own life, having already lost all will to live at that point.
