The Hittite Empire was not beautiful.

  • The entire aspect of Kail and Yuri being a Fantastic Romance that cannot result in happiness because they come from different times. Of course, since Yuri chooses to remain in ancient Turkey, this gets dropped and becomes more heartwarming.
  • All the deaths in the series. Especially the ones Yuri blames herself for because they happened due to her own recklessness or the plans that Nakia had for her.
    • Tito stayed behind to make sure Yuri could escape Nakia's palace, and was skinned alive. He was the first person to be kind to Yuri, and he happened to look a lot like her younger sister, which made her form an emotional bond to him even faster.
    • Ursula claimed to have been the one to assassinate King Arnuwanda, on Queen Dowager Nakia's orders, to free Yuri from suspicion and letting her return to Hattusa, as well as discredit and hopefully get Nakia stripped of her Tawannana title. That second part didn't work, and Ursula was executed, remaining her to be known as King Arnuwanda's assassin until the final part of the series.
    • Zananza being assassinated by one of Queen Nakia's henchmen, almost resulting in war breaking out between the Hittite Empire and Egypt.
    • The plague ending up killing a ton of people, including King Suppiluliuma.
    • Rusafa dying by throwing himself over Kail when Nakia tries to stab him. He ends up bleeding to death, albeit happy to hear that it did allow Kail to keep his grip on Yuri, keeping her from being sent through time and space.
  • The background of Nakia and Urhi. She was sent to become the concubine of the much older King Suppiluliuma, as a bargaining chip of Babylonia, and was looked down upon by the other concubines and Queen Hinti. Urhi was a priest, and the two of them met when Nakia ran off to a nearby spring to cry in solitude, while Urhi was taking a bath there. The two were both lonely and saw in each other a kindred spirit. Nakia begged Urhi to run away with her from Hattusa and they could get married, but Urhi said his being a eunuch meant he'd never be able to 'make her happy as a man'. Both remained in their positions, with Nakia eventually giving birth to Juda and planning to have her bloodline rule the Hittite Empire. Urhi always remained by her side as her personal confidant.
  • Yuri miscarrying her first child with Kail. Part of the Egypt arc, it's also sad to see the usually plucky Yuri staring off into space, apathetic to everything around her. She didn't even react to when Ramses said he could rape her right now, but he didn't go through with it.
  • When Yuri cuts a piece of her own hair to be buried alongside Rusafa, she talks to the dead and dully talks about how she'll become the Queen of the Hittite Empire, but that she can't even look forward to it in her grief. Kail actually has to remind her that her becoming Queen is just a part, the main thing is that the two of them are getting married.
  • Poor Juda. His mother plans to kill his older brothers, whom he loves very much, so that he can ascend the throne. He absolutely adores Kail and Yuri, and ecstatically talks about Kail ascending the throne as king and Juda being one of his advisors. Nakia eventually gives Black Water to Juda, turning him into her loyal puppet. Then the rumor of him being the son of Urhi and not King Suppiluliuma pops up, with Juda revealing that he's heard whispers of it for years. He realizes how much trouble he has caused to Kail and Yuri, and tries to kill himself. He survives, though isn't happy about it. And the finale has him break so much that he tries to kill his mother, but fails, and calls her out on all of her misdeeds. Then he says he's abdicating from the throne, to finally put a stop to her.
