- Little Johnny's death, and how he leaves his toys to the boy next to him, and asks John Rokesmith to give Bella a kiss for him.
- Bradley Headstone, despite trying to murder Eugene, is a tragic character. His suicide is just the cherry on top, especially how he leaves his beloved silver pocket watch for his former dear pupil Charlie, who had spurned him.
The 1998 series:
- Eugene and Lizzie's conversation just after their wedding, when Eugene fears that Lizzie will regret marrying him. She assures him that she won't. And then he almost falls unconscious again, but he wakes up when Lizzie calls his name. It manages to be heartwarming and heartbreaking at the same time.
