General

  • In many episodes, it is implied that Chibita is orphaned, often being seen living inside cement barrels or crummy houses.

Episodes from the 1988 series:

  • Episode 7: Chibita finds an abandoned baby and tries to take care of him by stealing the milk and towels from Osomatsu and his brothers.
    • The mother of said baby starts having second thoughts about keeping the baby, but Chibita is angered due the fact that she still abandoned him and refuses to give the baby to her. He ends up heartbroken when the baby ultimately chooses his mother.
  • In episode 31, Chibita has so much fun with the spirit of the Roses at the Natsu Matsuri that he accidentally neglects to water the rose. By the time he notices the spirit collapsing and vanishing right in his hands, he runs towards his house, but it's too late as the plant has already dried.
  • In episode 34, after a rough day and noticing his sextuplets ignoring him, Matsuzo decides to put his sons by pretending to be kidnapped and sending Chibita to warn them about the news, which they dismiss the first two times. The third time he hides in a can, but his children believe it's a prank from Chibita, unknowingly kicking and beating their father. Hurt by their cruelty, he disowns them and decides to adopt Chibita, who similarly ran away from home after being neglected by Dekapan.

Iyami, Alone in the Wind:

  • Just the premise alone is sad enough: An AU set in the Edo era, a dirty, raggedy Iyami befriends an orphaned little blind girl. This moment is when you realize you’re gonna be in for a heavy episode.
  • Iyami puts himself to work several jobs in order to raise money for Okiku’s treatment, but a jealous Chibita undoes this as he uses his influence as a governor to ban him from getting any money legally.
  • Knowing he's irredeemable in Okiku's eyes due to his mistreatment of Iyami, yet wanting to fix her eyes, Chibita secretly arranges his money to be stolen by Iyami and allows him to give it to Okiku before arresting him.
  • In the animated Adaptation, a desperate Iyami goes to a tournament hosted by Hatabou, losing the top of his hair and his middle teeth at the final battle.
  • In the climax of the episode, Iyami finally delivers the funds needed for Okiku’s treatment... right before he gets arrested and imprisoned for a number of years. By the time he’s released, he’s a withered and broken old man, walking through a town that’s evolved without him. His old friends and neighbors are nowhere to be found, and he’s turned away by everyone he tries to interact with. At one point, he’s reduced to drinking water from the river and eating from garbage cans.
  • Finally, e finds Okiku running her own workshop, alive and well... with working eyesight. Iyami cries in joy knowing she’s healed and happy; but she isn't able to recognize him as the one who gave her the money to fix her eyes, thus deciding to keep his real identity a mistery, wandering off and wishing Okiku nothing but happiness. You would be forgiven for wanting to lie down after this episode.
