Tear Jerker / Osana Reimu

Go To

  • From the 1.5 hours or so of fanvid of doujinshi Touhou Little Reimu is one of the most tearjerking, heartfelt stories ever encountered.
    • In the author's own words, "This is a story of when Hakurei Reimu was still young and the man-eating youkai (Rumia) was big." It can be split up into two parts: the heartwarming story of a newly formed family and the emotional spiral out of control as Rumia's man-eating instincts take over, leading to death of the elder Hakurei miko, memory wipes, and a load of DAMN YOU YUKARI!!
  • Part 5 of the sequel sets itself up like the final act of a classic Greek tragedy: Rumia regaining her memories and adult-like appearance and fighting against Reimu, intentionally burning her life force in her attacks to force a Suicide by Miko. After Rumia is defeated, she begs Reimu for forgiveness for having killed her mother years ago before she fades away. And all the while Marisa and the others are bawling their eyes out. Even Remilia, who rarely gives a damn about anyone not living under her roof who isn't Reimu or Marisa, silently tips her cap in respect, and the generally stoic Youmu finally breaks down as Rumia fully dissipates. Ouch.
  • Rumia showing Reimu the morass of darkness born from her mother's soul. It's embodied in a scene the woman probably experienced countless times - standing before a broken youkai, as the villagers mourn their dead and wounded, glaring at her with the same hatred and fear once directed at the monster she'd just slain (whose own gaze is frozen into a similar glare in death), with her only able to say "I'm sorry" over and over and over... Little wonder Rumia snapped upon realizing this was what her best friend felt all the time, hiding behind those masks.
  • The finale in part six takes off much of the edge from part five, salvaging the soul-crushing tragedy into a Bittersweet Ending: Rumia and Reimu's mother get to reconcile, and Reimu uses Fantasy Nature to pry open the pocket world their souls are being kept in to take Rumia back to the land of the living. Mom still has to pass on, but she gets to say goodbye to Yukari before leaving. And in the end, Reimu and Rumia are holding hands. The pair seriously earned it.
    • What truly breaks most viewers' hearts, however, is the goodbye between the Mother and Yukari. It's almost cheerful, until you realize that the Mom is still hiding behind a facade. Still hiding behind that mask and shrouding her emotions, she pretends that she's perfectly fine with everything. But when Yukari also cries and tells her to stop pretending, the Mom's true mask finally breaks.
