While Newshounds is mainly a satirical strip, there's more than a few moments that may leave you with tears in your eyes, especially in the later years.
- There's an arc from the latter half of 2000 where Ferris gets an idea for a game show stolen from him by Spelling Enterprises, but when he tries to sue them, he's tricked into signing a contract that forces him and the whole KPET crew to compete on the game show, hosted by Tori Spelling. After weeks of answering random questions from Tori, KPET won the prize of a billion dollars, a rise in audience ratings, and Ferris himself earns a kiss on the cheek from Tori herself and her e-mail address. Looks like a Happy Ending, right? WRONG! As it turns out, the Spelling Enterprises CEO purposely wrote the billion dollar check in Ferris' name, knowing perfectly well that KPET wouldn't be able to cash it, since Ferris (and other animals for that matter) doesn't have an I.D. When Lorna tries to complain about it to the media, she is labelled an "Ungrateful Nitpick" and brings negative publicity to KPET, while Spelling Enterprises take the opportunity to cancel the game show to create an even more successful show thanks to the publicity, becoming even richer than before while paying nothing to KPET. And as a depressed Ferris soon fids out, just because your favorite celebrity gives you a way to contact him/her, that doesn't necessarily mean that he/she will automatically become your friend and take your calls.
- And after that arc, we follow up with an arc where Alistair travels to the past (or hallucinates about it, since he does so after using cat-nip) and realises that he's a day from John Lennon getting shot, and desperately tries to prevent it. However, despite successfully finding John Lennon and informing him of what will happen, John refuses to avoid it, which leads to this strip.
John Lennon: Mr. Cat, I've learned if they're gonna get ya, they are gonna get ya anyway. - Roger forcing Lorna to give him KPET and Lorna's reaction to it. And it's far worse when you remember that Lorna regarded Roger the only normal date she ever had through her friend, and how petty his reason for doing that actually is: He only wants KPET so he can marry a porn star!
- Sam's reaction to 9/11.
- After Rochelle returns from the lab (without Wolfram), she and Wolfram have been away so long that her children, Malcolm and Emma, have started calling Della their "new Mama". Rochelle decides she is going to find Wolfram regardless of what it takes, including breaking into the home of one of the lab techs and interrogating him at knifepoint.Lab tech: If you kill me, they'll kill you instantly, dog.Rochelle: I have nothing to lose. My puppies have chosen their new parents already.
