Tear Jerker / My Girl

  • The absolutely horrifying scene of Thomas J being stung by bees crosses this with Nightmare Fuel. The music makes it even worse. Worst of all, you see his glasses fall off and you see bees crawling over the lenses. It's undoubtedly bone-chilling yet depressing as hell simultaneously!
    • The very next scene is of a police officer informing Harry of Thomas J's demise, as depressing quiet piano music plays all the while. You can also notice that Harry becomes very upset by the news.
    • Harry telling Vada about what happened to Thomas J is probably one of the saddest scenes in the entire movie. Her reaction is absolutely heartrending as well. Nobody, especially a child who just turned 11, should have to be subject to that. Especially considering how hard her life already was up to that point.
    • The funeral, and Vada realizing Mr. Bixler is engaged. Only The Nostalgia Critic can sum it up well:
"After the success of Home Alone, Macaulay Culkin (Thomas J.) was America's hottest child actor. Which is why it's so shocking any film, let alone a kid's film, had the balls to actually kill him off! This girl has a lot of grief to live with. Not only is her only friend in the entire world dead, but she's the one that knocked down the beehive that caused him to get stung to death, it's because of her mood ring that Culkin went back, her dad is the undertaker of Culkin's body, the funeral is held at her house and she finds out the teacher she had a crush on is getting married on the exact same day."
      • This stings even harder when she finds this out after Thomas J asks Vada if she'll think of him in case she doesn't get to marry Mr. Bixler.
    • Her Break the Cutie moment at his funeral...just...gah.
Vada: (crying) His face hurts! And where are his glasses? He can't see without his glasses! Put his glasses on! Put on his glasses! (breaking down into tears) He was gonna be an acrobat!
  • If you think Vada's having it rough, imagine what Thomas J's mother must be going through.
Some days I think I'll be okay. Others... well, I have to force myself even to get out of bed. I know it's crazy, but sometimes, I think he's just away at summer camp.
  • Thomas J's mother giving Vada back her mood ring counts as both this and heartwarming.
You were such a good friend to him. I hope you'll still come by and visit me.
    • Also, Vada reassuring Thomas J's mother:
Don't worry about Thomas J. My mother will take care of him.
