  • 'Coming Home': What starts out as a heartwarming reunion with his mother, quickly takes a turn for the worst when Amuro shoots a soldier resulting in his mother scolding him. Amuro takes this to mean that his mother doesn't love him anymore. Though they seem to have patched things up by the end of the episode, the last scene of the episode is his mother crying into the distance.
    • 'A Cosmic Glow' makes this even worse when Lalah senses that Amuro has no family in his heart.
Amuro: What difference does that make?
  • Ryu's death in 'Hatred and Sorrow' definitely counts as this especially with the rest of the crew crying and blaming themselves for it.
    • This goes further in 'The Trap of M'Quve' in which several members of the crew accidentally slip up and tell Ryu to go out and fight before remembering he can't.
  • After Bright has to go to sick bay, Mirai takes over as captain. The only problem is that she isn't qualified for such a position and as a result makes calls that hinder the base more than help it. At the end of it she's a blubbering mess begging for Bright and Ryu to tell her what to do.
  • Poor Miharu. Sure she was a Zeon spy but you can't help but feel bad for her when she realizes the impact of her actions and then when she tries to make things right, she ends up dying.
    • Kai's reaction also qualifies. Seeing this snarky JerkAss go to a crying Broken Bird is just heartbreaking.
    • As the story goes, the storyboards for Miharu's death caused Ichiro Itano, Yoshikazu Yasuhiko and Tomino himself to begin crying... and Tomino's the guy who drew the damn storyboards in the first place!
  • Lalah's entire story. A young girl who is implied in the Origin series to have been a victim of some form of trafficking, she is rescued by Char and sent to training as a newtype pilot. Later she encounters Amuro and forms a bond with him, putting her into a solid Love Triangle, with both of her interests heavily invested in opposing sides of the war. As she herself puts it, Amuro simply came into her life too late to be able to make a difference - implying that she is aware she's on the wrong side, but is unable to leave due to Undying Loyalty. Her anguish at the thought of either Amuro or Char dying leads to her sacrificing herself to prevent Char from being killed. Char and Amuro are both traumatized with grief due to her loss.
Amuro: I did something I'll never be able to forgive myself for... I killed Lalah! Why? Why did this happen?
  • The ending of the original series: after his bittersweet victory over his rival Char, Amuro was losing his will to live. Then he finally realized how much his shipmates cared for him; he escaped from the enemy fortress and battle, and found said shipmates, as he tearfully reunited with his adopted family.
  • For some reason, the destruction of White Base: That ship was their home from the destruction of the first colony. No matter how fierce the battle, whether it was in space or on Earth, and what comrades they lost, they always returned there. To see them floating outside and watch it break into fiery pieces... well.
