I'll miss you a lot, but I will be able to watch you and protect you. You won't be able to see or remember me, but I will be there.

Despite all the horrors that Mario, Luigi, and arguably all the characters go through, those same characters in Mario the Music Box and the ARC Expansion all experience dramas and tragedies of their own that will make you shed a tear.

  • Mario and Luigi venture into the mansion and finds out a few disturbing things about the residents who used to live there. All but a few were murdered by Alice and those who weren't either commited suicide or were killed by someone else. Flashbacks, journal entries, and photos show the bros that the killer, Alice, was such a nice lady who was loved by all before she went on her killing spree. No one was spared, not even the children (and not even her own).
  • The scene leading to a Game Over after Mario tries to find Luigi the first time around. Before this, Luigi has encountered several illusions involving Mario, and the last broke him. When Mario finds him, Luigi begins choking him, believing he's only an illusion. Two choices are then given. One to look for a weapon to use in self-defence, and the other to call out for Luigi.
    • Should you choose the former, Mario will stab Luigi in the chest. It will lead to an incredibly sad and moving cutscene. Luigi gives Mario a serene speech, not even angry, because he'll no longer be in his way or his shadow. After he dies, Mario shortly commits suicide with the same knife.
    • Choose the latter, and Luigi kills Mario. That's when he finally realizes, and kills himself by jumping out a window. Neither brother can live without the other, especially when dead at their own hands.
  • The page image comes from the "Omitted Memory" ending. After Mario is consumed by Alice's curse, Luigi finds that everyone that knew Mario no longer does; he's gone from their memories. Pictures that used to have Mario on them do not have Mario on them. The kicker comes when Mario's spirit comes to Luigi, saying that Mario, too, will miss Luigi a lot, but he will be able to watch over Luigi and protect him, because even though Luigi will not be able to see or remember him, Mario will be there. A sad ending indeed.
    • The Remastered version details that Alice was detached from the curse after Mario defeated her, and got reborn as a baby. In a post-credits scene, after wiping everyone's memories of his existence, Mario creates a new reality for Alice stay, and spends the next years raising her as her father, to protect her from the curse. Alice is shown to have grown into a young child. Unfortunately, Mario can't stay with Alice forever and must go back to the mansion, otherwise the new reality will crumble away. One night, while the two are stargazing, Mario says his final goodbyes to Alice, stating that he will watch over her as well. Alice, now all alone, strives to be a strong independent woman when she grows up, for her Appa Mario.

  • The main game has five main endings. The first four are all sad and horrifying. In the fifth ending, Mario barely manages to convince Alice to stop hounding the two brothers. They slowly walk back home, and Mario decides to burn his notes. The brothers decide to never mention the music box again, forever traumatized.

  • The ARC expansion has it's its own share of drama and tragedy, as we learn more about Alice, Riba and their connection to the past versions of Mario and Luigi (Marchionne and Luciano), who both suffered tragic ends. Most of the ends of the expansion range from bittersweet to just plain bitter, and even when Mario breaks Len's time loop by not saving, he's clearly exhausted by what he experienced.
    • And the tragedy isn't over yet, as The Stinger reveals the existance of Luciano's son, who is bitter over what happened to his father and constantly obsesses over his family heirloom, a pocket watch.
