Tear Jerker / Marina Diamandis

Go To

  • "Baby", a song Marina sings in collaboration with Clean Bandit, is a very upbeat and dance-like song that is extremely catchy. However, the lyrics are really sad, with Marina mourning that she cannot be with the one she loves ever again because she's already in a relationship with someone else.
    • In what might be a case of Fridge Brilliance, the track was included in the Love half of Love + Fear. You'd think the Love section would be uplifting and happier, but then again not all love stories have happy endings.
  • "Immortal" is one of Marina's saddest tracks, if not her single saddest. Marina laments that she cannot live forever, stating that only love lives on when "the world ends in fire" and "the seas are frozen in time." The repeated "everybody dies, dies," in the chorus as well as the melancholy Background Music does NOT make things cheerful. Marina sounds like she has truly given up.
  • "Buy the Stars" is a song about an over-controlling father who pushes his daughter from a young age into things she doesn't want to do, and it's very poignant.
  • "Numb" is a sad song about a sociopath navigating her world without family or friends.
  • "Happy", with it's mix of sadness about the past and hope and contentedness now, is a sure fire tearjerker if there ever was one.
  • The verses of "Homewrecker" are extremely poignant. Electra narrates them like she's accompanying the listener through their own bad breakup or situation, almost like a counselor. The tone of the verses get darker until Electra almost cruelly mocks the listener: "Instead of love and trust and laughter, what YOU get is happy "never" after." It isn't until Electra sorrowfully states "But we cannot escape the past, so you and I will never last" that we actually realise that SHE'S the one ending the relationship or causing the listener's heartache.
  • "Teen Idle", a song about being a Broken Bird / Emo Teen who's suicidal and full of self-loathing.
  • The breakup arc of "Froot" is pretty sad. From the confession of "I'm A Ruin" to the emotional neediness of "Blue" and the Downer Ending with "Immortal".
  • Fans were deeply touched when Marina recorded a cover of Cyndi Lauper's "True Colours". Matches as Heartwarming, when you consider that Marina's songs from The Family Jewels through to FROOT all touch upon identity struggles and self-esteem issues to some degree. Hearing Marina essentially say "You are your best self, just be you" is just lovely.
  • The haunting instrumentals and the somber lyrics of "Fear and Loathing".
  • State of Dreaming could be interpreted as a song about someone who deludes herself with a fantasy world to deal with the hopelessness of her real life.
    • "I live my live inside a dream, only waking when I sleep, I would sell my sorry soul if I could have it all." You can hear the desperation in her voice.
    • Word of God confirms that it was written about Marilyn Monroe's personal demons, such a far cry from the glamorized media image of her.
  • "Living Dead", despite its instrumental sounding like something you can dance to, the lyrics are downright depressing. The premise is basically about how she feels she hasn't lived her life and has only watched others live their lives.
  • "Shampain", A song about the downside of getting drunk. She sings about drinking alone while not being able to sleep at night. The lyrics stick out way more in the acoustic version, where her voice is more emotional in it and it is slow paced.
  • "Sinful", Basically about being kicked out and rejected for holding different ideals from your family due to religion. Even sadder when you could think of it as a song about somebody who is LGBT+ and possibly is afraid of coming out or has already came out
  • "Radioactive", Upbeat and gets you going, the acoustic is absolutely soul crushing when you can hear the sadness in it. "I take one look at you and I grow cold" gets a whole lot sadder stripped back without the beat
  • "Scab & Plaster", A song about a girl and her father's bad relationship, with the father constantly bringing her up only to bring her down and make her lose her confidence to the point where she only finds solitude in "a cup of loneliness" (Alcohol).
  • "Guilty", Marina stated that this was based off of a dream she had but never the less it was still tragic. Even sadder in the acoustic, where you can hear the regret she has from killing a dog in her own voice.
  • "Lonely Hearts Club" is a pretty upbeat bop, but the lyrics are downright depressing. Marina laments about finding herself joining the stigmatised, outcasts in society who aren't successful with relationships, and the fact that "love will never be forever", therefore saying that love itself is pointless because it isn't permanent.
  • Are we not going to talk about how the majority of these songs (even the Electra Heart ones) are autobiographical?
  • "Are You Satisfied?" is about a Broken Ace who puts on a happy facade when underneath it all they're stressed and lonely.
It's my problem if I wanna pack up and run away
It's my business if I feel the need to smoke and drink and sway
It's my problem, it's my problem if I feel the need to hide
And it's my problem if I have no friends and feel I want to die!
