Tear Jerker / Maleficent: Mistress of Evil

Go To

  • Just the fact that various fairy creatures are being poached from the moors and later experimented on. We even see one's death onscreen when Ingrith's mad scientist henchman figures out a way to kill them and demonstrates it to her.
  • If the iron dust made from the glowing dandelion-like flowers that can kill fairies wasn't enough, it's later revealed that the field the flowers grow from are where the moor folk bury their dead.
  • Conall's death. He shields Maleficent and takes an array of iron bullets in a deliberate trap to draw out her and the Dark Fey. He survives long enough to be brought back to the Fey's hideout, but the other healing Fey cannot save him, and he gives Maleficent some final encouraging words to find the way for peace between the Fey and humans before the enchanted grounds takes his body.
  • The whole chapel scene is a merciless massacre of cute fairies, who are defenseless against the iron dust and can't get out. Kill the Cutie en masse.
  • Flittle's death.
    • Until that point, she was pretty much a comic relief character. Here, the bumbling cutie witnesses a plant fairy turning into a regular plant and, apparently, calculates that if the same happens to her while she is inside the organ, its pipes will get clogged and everyone else will be saved. So she smiles sadly at Knotgrass and Thistlewit, says, "Goodbye girls" and charges into the organ.
    • Knotgrass and Thistlewit realize too late what she's doing and desperately plead her to stop. Of course, she doesn't listen, and they can only watch helplessly as their friend dies.
    • A bit mitigated as the final scene indicates Flittle is somehow still alive in flower form and able to turn Aurora's dress blue.
  • Aurora realizes that the fairies of the Moors are getting massacred in the chapel, and as hard as she tries, she can't help them. And after that, she gets to see Maleficent Taking the Bullet for her.
  • Maleficent's apparent death, made worse by Aurora screaming while sinking to her knees in the ashes that are Maleficent's body.
  • The fact that Ingrith was the one who cursed John with the spindle, using Maleficent as the scapegoat. It certainly did not help when she silently condemns him to sleep forever to his face because of his desire to see peace. It's heartbreaking to realize how easily she ultimately cares little for her own family.
  • The sheer fact that Ingrith is so hateful of magical creatures, she's willing to use her own son's wedding to the girl he loves as a plot to lure in and murder Aurora's people.
  • Minor, but there is a disheartening element to Aurora asking Maleficent, the person that she has accepted as her mother, to hide her horns with a black scarf for the dinner with Phillip's parents near the start of the film. It's pretty clear that Maleficent is affected negatively by this request, but she accepts even when Aurora realizes it was wrong to ask this of her.
    • Diaval's little disapproving hum and his whole body language are saying "not cool, Aurora".
