  • Masaru has been through more in just a few months than most adults go through in a lifetime.
  • Narumi's (apparent) death. In an attempt to protect Masaru and his uncle from the rubble during the mansion's fire, Narumi stands just above him, supporting the stones piercing his back and the fire burning together. Worst of all, despite all that, he tries to pretend he's fine and says that despite the life he led, he was happy to have found Masaru and inspires the boy to be more courageous and to think with his heart in the last moments. And to top it off, the Hope Spot, followed by Masaru's shocked expression on seeing that he's holding Narumi's severed arm, is heartbreaking.
  • Masaru getting really mad at Atsushi for having a mother to fight him, while his mother is dead and his father left him as bait for a bunch of killers.
  • Atsushi's backstory. Although at first he just looks like a bully who likes to abuse Masaru for no reason, after his backstory is revealed, we sympathize with him. His family owns a steel factory, which produced screws and steel parts in general. However, its biggest customers went bankrupt, damaging 90% of factory sales. Without money and unable to pay the bills, Atsushi's parents started to get busy and fight a lot, failing to pay attention to him and his sister. This led him to intimidate Masaru because he was a rich boy, but still, he thought of one day making honest money as a fighter. Over time, thanks to Masaru's Character Development, he stopped intimidating Masaru and even started to defend him from other attackers. But in the end, after all this, when it finally looked like they were going to get along, Masaru decides to leave so as not to attract more kidnappers to school and left a bag of money at Atsushi's house, leaving his friend in tears and angry with him.
  • Pretty much all of the hospital arc. Made worse by the cheery beginning.
  • Mark's collected drawings...including the single, lonely wing.
  • The end of the battle of Sahara. All the participating Shirogane dies, Narumi lost all his limbs, which were replaced with puppet limbs, and it's all for nothing, given the Francine they fought wasn't even the real one.
  • Sylvestre's death. Most Automata believe that they're superior to humans in any way that matters, and mock concepts like "friendship"; but for Sylvestre, this is just a coping mechanism to cover the fact that, deep down, he actually feels lonely and envies humanity's ability to bond with each other. When Masaru calls him out on this, Sylvestre lashes out in anger and pain; only when he's dying does he admit that Masaru was completely right.
  • Francine — Both the human woman and the doll made to resemble her. So much pain, anguish, and tragedy happen in both their names, and both of them suffer that weight horribly, only finding some kind of relief in death.
  • Shirogane’s treatment by those who blame her for Faceless’s actions and the crimes committed by the Automata, including Narumi and Ming-Xia. With Narumi being cruel and threatening towards her refusing to believe she isn’t like her past reincarnation.
  • Ming-Xia goes though a realization when she learns that Shirogane has been using her blood to treat everyone ignoring the strain it puts her though, making her realize her mistreatment towards her was unjustified.
  • Narumi goes though one as well went Shirogane sacrifices herself and goes with
Harlequin in order to protect him. This makes him realize how harsh we was towards her, especially when he revealed he already regained his memories of their past relationship.
