Tear Jerker / Isn't It Romantic

  • The opening, where a young Natalie happily watches Pretty Woman, only for her mother to bluntly and cruelly explain to her that in the real world, women like them—i.e., "normal" women who don't have the advantage of looking like a young Julia Roberts—don't get the rom-com love story and the dashing hero. Jeez, Mom, way to break the poor girl's heart!
Natalie's Mom: They'll never make a movie about girls like us. You know why?
    Natalie: Why?
Natalie's Mom: Because it would be so sad. They'd have to sprinkle Prozac on the popcorn, or people would kill themselves. You see, Natalie, love's not a fairytale. There's no happy endings.
Natalie: There is always gonna be a happy ending.
Natalie's Mom: No, darling. Someone might marry you for a visa. That's about it.
  • Natalie attempts to explain her situation to Blake — and finishes it with the thing that is freaking her out the most: "Everyone is treating me like I'm special... and I'm not special." Just how defeated she sounds when she says it. This will hit home for anybody who has suffered from low self-esteem.
