Tear Jerker / Grom: A Rough Childhood

Go To

  • The ending of the film. Konstantin Grom is killed in the line of duty, thanks in part to Igor removing a cartridge from his firearm. Igor goes back to their apartment alone and washes the blood off his hands with a tearful, dead-eyed stare.
    • This is immediately followed by a Time-Passes Montage, as we watch Igor go through life without his father: his expression going from grieving and broken, to blank and dead-eyed, to hardened and angry... ending with him donning his signature flat cap as Police Major Grom.
  • Igor's conversation with Konstantin in the apartment.
Konstantin: Do you have any dreams?
Igor: I haven't thought about it yet.
Konstantin: You should think about it. [Puts a hand on his shoulder]
    Igor: Dad... Please don't go.
    • What's worse, the trailer framed Igor's reunion with Konstantin as a lighthearted conversation (complete with upbeat music) between a father and son who haven't seen each other in a while; in context, it's part of a Dream Sequence Igor is having about his dead father, which was probably born out of his own guilt.
    • We finally get some context for why Igor's apartment is so run-down: he never changed or updated anything, because he wanted to keep everything as it was when he lived there with his father.
    • When Yulia wakes up, she finds Igor lying on the apartment floor, looking through his old scrapbook ...including the tickets to Disneyland, and the Polaroid he took of his father on the day he died. As Yulia puts her arms around him, he begins silently weeping.
    • The roll of money Alexey paid Igor for the footage of the Anubis cult is still there, unspent, tucked in the scrapbook with a clothespin. One can hardly blame him for not wanting to spend it.
