Tear Jerker / Dreams of a Life

  • The situation as a whole. Someone managed to fall through the cracks of society and die alone, her body remaining unnoticed for years. What's more unbelievable is that this was a young woman, described by those who knew her as "intelligent" and "successful", a "high flyer".
  • The film opens on a recreation of Vincent's abandoned apartment with filthy walls, the furniture and kitchen covered in cobwebs, and a huge pile of envelopes sitting on her doormat.
  • The newspaper ads asking if anyone has seen Vincent, presumably posted by family members or concerned friends. She did have people who were looking for her and loved her, but because she isolated herself from society, they weren't able to find her until she was long dead.
  • Vincent (as played by Zawe Ashton) wearing an evening gown and miming the song "My Smile Is Just a Frown (Turned Upside Down)" by Carolyn Crawford, alone in her apartment. After a short period of silence, she buries her head in her hands with an expression of despair.
  • The regret Vincent's interviewed friends have that they weren't able to do more. It's particularly heartbreaking to watch the interviews with her former boyfriend, Martin. It's clear that he never stopped loving her.
  • The revelation that when Vincent was last in the hospital (being treated for a peptic ulcer that, it is speculated, she may have died from complications of), she listed her next of kin as being her bank manager.
  • The ending scene of the documentary recreates the final night of Vincent's life, as she lies down, goes to sleep and never wakes up. The camera pans down to one of the Christmas presents she was wrapping as light from the still playing TV washes over it. This scene is made all the more poignant by the accompanying song, "Undone" by Alice Temple.
    Watch me fall from grace,
    Disappear with no trace,
As I try to erase you
Feel the pain and watch me bleed,
Surely this is not what I need.
