  • In The Dark Portal:
    • At the end, when Audrey finally accepts the death of her father after seeing him as one of the apparitions that drown Jupiter.
Audrey stared over the edge and closed her eyes. Tears streamed down her face. Then she looked into her mother's mild, brown eyes and cried huskily: "Father's... dead."
"I know dear, I know," sighed Mrs. Brown.
  • In The Crystal Prison:
    • Isaac Nettle's reaction after learning that his son Jenkin was carried off by an owl. Though he could be very abusive toward him, deep down he really loved him and his raw grief at losing him is heartbreaking. It's made even worse when he finds an owl pellet containing Jenkin's mousebrass.
  • In The Final Reckoning:
    • After Audrey has a "I Know You're in There Somewhere" Fight with the ghost of Piccadilly, and is finally able to get him to remember who he was. They confess their love for one another and share a Last Kiss before he crosses over to the other side.
He pressed his phantom lips against hers and with that kiss he told her more than words ever could. They parted and, looking into each other's eyes, he merged with the light and melted away. She touched her lips that still felt the tender, whispering kiss and fell to her knees.
  • In The Oaken Throne:
    • When Ysabelle says goodbye to her parents. She knows she will never see them alive again, and that they are giving their lives as a diversion to the bat army while she journeys to Greenreach become the new Starwife. Ysabelle's father outwardly shows his grief, while her mother manages to keep herself together... until Ysabelle leaves and everything sinks in.
"You did what you had to do, for the good of all."
"But I never held her!" she sobbed bitterly. "I never even said good-bye!"
    • The attack on Coll Regalis begins as Ysabelle's army is marching through the forest. They see the fires of the battle behind them and share a moment of silence. Suddenly, Ysabelle gasps and clutches her chest. She has somehow sensed her parents' pain and knows they have been killed.
    • Giraldus' reaction to the death of Tysle. His violent display of emotion is heartbreaking.
    • The ending, when Ysabelle rejects Vesper after his declaration of love, and then when she reconsiders and races back to the place she left him to tell him... only to find him dead.
