Tear Jerker / Dawn of the Dead (2004)

Go To

  • The young girl zombie, Vivian, ends up killing Louis. It’s even more tragic considering that Ana last saw her skating down the road merely hours before. It’s quite a shocker, to say the least.
    • There’s also her behavior, because unlike many of the other infected, she seems to recognize them, simply standing in the doorway, regarding the sight of Ana and Louis for a good ten to fifteen seconds before assaulting them and even responding to Louis calling her name. It really shows that there are still fragments of what used to be a person in there, or worse, is still in there at least to an extent.
  • Nicole having a final moment with her dad before he dies and reanimates as a zombie and is shot by Kenneth.
    "You want every single second..."
  • Kenneth having no choice but to put down Andy after he turns into a zombie.
    "I'm sorry, brother..."
    • Andy's entire ordeal, spending every day having to make sure the zombies don't get in his apartment and trying to thin out the ranks with his massive supply of bullets only to find that the dead don't stop coming. And at the end, just as he's about to be rescued...
  • The end of the DVD feature "We Interrupt This Program," with the reporter completely shell-shocked after spending all day covering the zombie outbreak, having seen it spread from a few isolated incidents to the entire globe in 26 hours, and tearfully telling his wife he's coming home and to get the kids ready. Even worse, he's played by Richard Biggs in his final role before his untimely death.
    • Similarly, the news report shows a sheriff overseeing the extermination of some zombies. The sheriff opens up and expresses how awful he feels to have to put down people he actually knew, including a real estate agent who sold him his house and a one-night stand.
  • Michael admitting he was best at being a father. Keyword being was. Notice how his kids never show up throughout the whole movie, implying that they perished due to the outbreak.
  • The exchange between Kenneth and Andre in the bathroom, where Andre expresses his fears of damnation for his earlier crimes, and confesses that he just wants to be able to raise his child and give it a better life, to make up for his own presumably rough upbringing, and make up for some of his own actions. Made even worse upon rewatch, considering what happens to not only Andre, but Luda and their child as well.
  • "You're going to kill my family?!"
    • Even worse, the "family" includes Luda and her unborn child, who were both infected and now undead.
      • A literal Shoot the Shaggy Dog Story for Luda's child, it was infected and born undead for all of a few minutes, both its mother and father were killed before the others killed it. If you listen closely before the undead child is killed, you can vaguely hear it speaking one word through the incoherent guttural screeching.
  • Glen accidentally killing himself and Monica thanks to a hard left making his chainsaw go wild. The fact that this also results in the crash of the bus and all of the deaths that follow just makes this moment sadder.
  • Michael's death. Ana's reaction and the music make it worse.
  • The scenes intercut with the credits imply an All for Nothing situation. For context: The remaining survivors, Ana, Kenneth, Nicole, Chips, and Terry, land on an island, during which Chips runs off barking... then a horde of zombies starts running out the forest near the dock. The last we see is Kenneth trying to Hold the Line against them, Terry dropping the camera, and then the next intercut scenes consist entirely of the horde, while human screams are heard, implying they did not survive.
