Tear Jerker / Coil

  • The final minute of Coil's last ever concert consisted of an ethereal, droning, ambient five-note chord sequence, and Jhonn Balance repeating his last ever words on stage: "It just is." In multiple ways, and especially with how it was incorporated into the studio version of "Going Up", it's the biggest Tear Jerker the group ever had.

  • Jhonn's last emails, all written to Current 93 founder David Tibet:

      BALANCE

  • The overall bleak tone of The Ape of Naples, already employing the fact Jhonn was no longer with us, but the music makes it worse given the album's themes of death, especially with "Going Up", featuring the aforementioned "It just is.".
    • "Fire of the Mind"'s original version on Backwards may be even worse, thanks to the instrumentation. Even the guitars seem to shriek and wail in empathy with Jhonn.
  • "Broccoli," off Musick To Play In The Dark, is a straighforward, brutal reminder that We All Die Someday also means your family, told mostly in Sleazy's singsong chant.
